Robert Hofstede is an experienced manager of projects and institutions on nature conservation and sustainable development all around the world, but with particular emphasis on Latin America. He works independently as a consultant for different international institutes for sustainable development, environmental management and climate change. Since 2009, he worked on assignments with organizations such as UNEP, FAO, EU, IUCN, World Bank, CAF, WWF, IFAD, GIZ, the Alexander von Humboldt Institute in Colombia, the ministries of environment of Ecuador and Peru, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands and consulting firms from the United States and Europe. He carried out consultancies in Ecuador, Suriname, Guyana, Colombia, Peru, Bolivia, Brazil, Mexico, Costa Rica, Panama, Kenya and Ghana, among many other countries.

Between 2016 and 2018, he had a two-year assignment as Associate Director Climate Change at the International Development Research Centre (IDRC, Canada). He lead the development and implementation of a global program to support research, and networks that informed the adoption of cost-effective solutions to climate change in Latin America, Africa and Asia. One of his key achievements was establishing a 10M$ partnership between Canada and The Netherlands to restart the Climate and Development Knowledge Network (CDKN).

Between 2006 and 2009 he directed the regional programme for South America of the IUCN, which provided him with experience at continental and global level in programme development and assessment, policy advocacy and high level diplomacy. Before this, worked as project director at Consorcio de Desarrollo Sostenible de la Ecorregión Andina (CONDESAN), and was lecturer and coordinator of the Andean programme of the Institute for Biodiversity and Ecosystem Dynamics of the University of Amsterdam (see cv).

Robert was global chair of the Mountain Forum (2009 - 2011) and is permanent contributor of Infoandina. He is a founding member of Corporación Ecopar in Ecuador. During his professional career he has become one of the most renown experts on the páramo ecosystem and has been principal speaker at academic congresses, training courses and policy meetings on the theme. He has contributed to knowledge generation on the ecology and environmental management of tropical ecosystems in general, through a series of academic publications and policy papers, policy papers and opinion articles. Trained as a tropical ecologist, his academic background includes many aspects of agronomy, forestry and geography. He has up-to-date and practical expertise in protected areas management, participatory rural development, climate change, environmental policy development, sustainable forest management, ecosystem approach and integrated land management. Robert works and lives permanently in South America since 1996, where he has built up an extensive personal and  institutional network.
